Daily exercise is one of the best habits to improve mental health, support gut health, balance hormone levels, encourage weight control, and just promote overall wellness. But prioritizing moving your body is easier said than done, which is why we want to share a few tips on how to incorporate exercise into daily life. Keep reading to learn more!
Schedule time for exercise into your family calendar.
One of the most effective ways to add more exercise into your everyday life is by simply scheduling it into your weekly calendar. If you book a group class or join a running club, you’re much more likely to stick with it. Or, if you’re busy with the kids, incorporate activities like turning a walk around the neighborhood into a scavenger hunt and planning family time that involves a lot of walking, like going to the zoo, going on a bike ride, etc.
Ask someone else to exercise with you.
Another option is to commit to exercising with someone else, whether that’s a partner, spouse, friend, or other family member. Not only are you less likely to skip a workout, but you’ll also have a motivating buddy to keep you going! As previously mentioned, joining a group session or class can be a great way to change up your weekly routine.
Combine exercise with daily tasks you already do.
Not all exercise needs to be in 30 to 45-minute blocks. Take advantage of the small tasks you do regularly and combine them with simple exercises like squats, leg raises, stretches, and push-ups. Whether you’re emptying the dishwasher, doing laundry or yard work, even brushing your teeth, or waiting for your coffee to brew in the morning, these little pockets of time can be filled with easy core exercises and stretches that will add up to your overall movement for the day.
Adjust your routine at work.
If you have a sedentary desk job, it can certainly be more challenging knowing how to incorporate exercise into daily life. But here are a few ideas:
- Join a lunch break walk club or start one yourself!
- Make a lot of calls? Walk around, do leg raises, or do other stationary stretches while you talk!
- Get a standing desk– even better if you can also use a walking pad while you work!
Make the most of your “downtime”.
While everyone deserves to relax after a long day, you should try to balance staying active with taking a well-deserved rest. If you already live a pretty sedentary lifestyle, instead of sitting on the couch to watch TV, try riding a stationary bike while you enjoy your favorite TV show. The most important thing to remember is that the goal is to have at least 30 minutes of activity per day. It doesn’t have to be all at once– exercising for 10 minutes 3 times a day is much more manageable!
